Lion's Mane & Nerve Growth Factor (NGF)

2025-02-14//READ: 5 MIN//BY CHEMGRADE RESEARCH

The Neurogenesis Trigger

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is unique among medicinal mushrooms for its ability to stimulate the synthesis of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). NGF is a protein essential for the maintenance and growth of neurons, specifically in the hippocampus (memory center).

Mycelium vs. Fruiting Body

This is where most products fail. The bioactive compounds are located in specific parts of the fungi:

  • Hericenones: Found in the Fruiting Body (The mushroom cap).
  • Erinacines: Found in the Mycelium (The root network).
Current research suggests Erinacines are the more potent NGF inducers. However, most "Mycelium" products are simply mycelium grown on rice/oats and ground up—resulting in a product that is 60% starch.

Sourcing Rule

Do not buy generic "Mushroom Powder." Look for a Dual Extract (Alcohol + Water) that guarantees β-Glucan content (>25%) or specifically lists Erinacine content. Avoid products where "Oats" or "Rice" are primary ingredients.
