The 8% Threshold
The "Omega-3 Index" measures the percentage of EPA and DHA in your red blood cell membranes. Data from the Framingham Heart Study indicates that an index of >8% is associated with the lowest risk of sudden cardiac death and all-cause mortality. Most Westerners sit dangerously low at <4%.
EPA vs. DHA
They are not interchangeable:
- EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid): The anti-inflammatory powerhouse. Best for joint pain, mood, and heart health.
- DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid): Structural component of the brain and retina. Best for cognition and fetal development.
Dosage Reality
A standard 1000mg pill often only contains 300mg of EPA/DHA. You need 2g - 4g of combined EPA/DHA daily to move the needle on the Omega-3 Index. Read the label closely.
