Alpha-GPC: Blood Brain Barrier Transport
The Transport Mechanism
To synthesize acetylcholine, the brain needs choline. However, the Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) is a strict gatekeeper. It rejects charged molecules. Standard Choline Bitartrate is a salt; it is charged and poorly lipid-soluble. It raises plasma choline (good for the liver) but struggles to enter the brain.
The Lipid Carrier
Alpha-GPC (L-Alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine) contains a glycerol backbone, making it lipid-soluble. It uses specific transporters to bypass the BBB restrictions. This results in a measurable spike in acetylcholine synthesis within 45 minutes of ingestion.
Alpha-GPC vs. Citicoline
Both are excellent, but they serve different roles:
- Alpha-GPC: Fast-acting, high choline yield (40%). Best for "The Zone" / Pre-Workout.
- Citicoline (CDP-Choline): Slower acting, lower choline yield (18%), but provides Uridine. Best for long-term repair.
Protocol
For high-intensity cognitive output: 300mg - 600mg Alpha-GPC. Warning: High doses can cause depression in some users ("The Cholinergic Blues"). Start low.
